Renting out your RV changes the insurance.
For owners who list a motorhome, travel trailer or camper on a rental platform: what your own policy does, what the platform provides, and the gaps between them.

Personal use, rental use
Most personal vehicle policies are written for personal use. Many exclude a vehicle used as a public or livery conveyance, and the Illinois Department of Insurance says it is not uncommon for personal auto policies to exclude coverage when you receive compensation. California’s personal vehicle sharing law, written for private passenger vehicles, goes further: it lets the owner’s insurer exclude any and all coverage while the vehicle is being used through a sharing program, and makes the program assume the owner’s liability during that use. A personal RV policy that doesn’t know about your rentals may not answer when a renter has a claim.
Platform protection fills part of that, but only part. Texas, for example, requires peer-to-peer programs to tell owners that the program’s insurance applies only during each sharing period, that the owner’s own insurance may not cover a shared vehicle, and that sharing a vehicle with a lien on it may violate the loan contract. I read your current policy, the platform’s terms and your loan papers together, then quote coverage for the time the RV is yours and the time it’s rented.
- Your personal RV policyWritten for your own use; it may exclude or limit rental use.

What underwriters will ask
Having these ready means I can go to market on the first call. The quote form asks for the same things, and anything you don’t know yet can wait.
- The RV: type, year, make, model, length, VIN and value.
- Rental activity: platforms you list on and nights rented per year.
- Delivery: whether renters drive or tow it, or you deliver and set it up.
- Current policy: declarations page for the RV and any tow vehicle.
- Loan: lender name and what the loan requires.
- Platform terms: the protection plan you chose and its deductible.
RV rental host insurance, answered
Does my personal RV policy cover renters?
Often not. Personal policies are written for personal use, many exclude a vehicle used for hire, and some states let the owner’s insurer exclude coverage entirely while the vehicle is shared through a program. Read your policy, or send it to me, before your first booking.
Doesn’t the rental platform insure my RV?
During the booking, under its own terms. Texas requires peer-to-peer programs to disclose that their insurance applies only during each sharing period and that after it ends there may be no coverage for the renter’s use. Ask the platform what its plan pays for, what the deductible is, and what it excludes.
Will my insurer cancel me for renting my RV?
It depends on the state and the policy. California, for example, bars an insurer from cancelling or nonrenewing a personal auto policy solely because the vehicle was made available through a qualifying personal vehicle sharing program, but that law is written for private passenger vehicles. Tell your insurer, or me, before you list.
Can I rent out an RV that has a loan on it?
Check the loan first. Texas requires peer-to-peer programs to warn owners that sharing a vehicle with a lien on it may violate the lienholder contract. Many loans also require physical damage coverage to stay in force.
What should I ask the platform?
What its plan pays for physical damage and liability, the deductible you or the renter pays, whether interior damage and awnings or slide-outs are included, and what happens if a renter keeps the RV past the return time.
Do you offer RV rental host insurance outside California?
Yes. Clients across the country send the same quote form. Sam Alishahi is licensed in 48 states and Washington, DC and places policies there directly. In Florida and Washington, where Sam's licenses are still being issued, a partner agency in your state helps in the meantime. The shopping across carriers works the same way.
