The minimum is rarely enough
California requires liability coverage of at least $30,000 per person and $60,000 per accident for injuries, and $15,000 for property damage.
Those limits can be used up quickly in a serious accident. I compare higher limits, uninsured motorist coverage and physical damage across carriers so you can see the trade-offs.
- LiabilityInjuries and damage you cause to others. California minimum: 30/60/15.
- Uninsured motoristYour injuries when the at-fault driver has no or too little insurance.
- Collision and comprehensiveDamage to your own car from accidents, theft, fire and other causes.
- Non-standardCoverage for drivers with tickets, accidents or lapses in coverage.
What underwriters will ask
Having these ready means I can go to market on the first call. The quote form asks for the same things, and anything you don’t know yet can wait.
- Vehicles: year, make, model and VIN if handy.
- Drivers: everyone in the household who drives. I’ll collect license details by phone.
- History: tickets and accidents in the last three years.
- Current policy: declarations page and expiration date.
- Use: commuting, pleasure or business.
- Garaging: where the cars are parked overnight.
Auto insurance, answered
What is California’s minimum auto liability coverage?
$30,000 per person and $60,000 per accident for bodily injury, and $15,000 for property damage.
Should I carry more than the minimum?
Often, yes. Serious accidents can exceed minimum limits, leaving you personally responsible for the rest.
Can I get insurance with tickets or an accident?
Yes. Non-standard carriers write drivers with violations, usually at higher rates.
Does my personal policy cover business driving?
Not always. Vehicles used mainly for business may need commercial auto coverage.
Do you offer auto insurance outside California?
Yes. Clients across the country send the same quote form. California policies are placed directly; outside California the request is handled together with a partner agency in your state, and the shopping across carriers works the same way. Rules, minimums and markets differ by state — see insurance requirements by state.
