How it works

Transcripts, deadlines and sealed records

A court reporter's claim usually comes from the record itself: a transcript error that changes testimony, a missed delivery deadline before a filing date, or audio that's lost before it's transcribed. Reporters also hold confidential depositions, medical records and sealed exhibits, so a lost laptop or hacked cloud account is a real exposure. California's certified shorthand reporters are licensed by the Court Reporters Board.

I place reporting firms and independent reporters with errors and omissions as the core, add cyber for the files you store and share, and cover steno machines, laptops and audio gear that travel to depositions.

  • Errors and omissionsClaims from transcript errors and missed deadlines.
  • Cyber liabilityBreaches of depositions, exhibits and client files.
  • EquipmentSteno machines, laptops and recorders on the road.
  • General liabilityVisitors hurt at your office or deposition suite.

Questions

Court reporter insurance, answered

Does E&O cover a missed transcript deadline?

Errors and omissions can respond to claims that a late or wrong transcript caused a client harm, subject to the policy terms.

Are my contract reporters covered by my firm's policy?

Sometimes, depending on how the policy defines who is insured. Many firms ask contractors to carry their own E&O as well.

What if my laptop with depositions is stolen?

Equipment coverage can replace the laptop. Cyber coverage can handle notifying people and other costs if confidential files are exposed.

Do I need coverage if I work from home?

Yes. A homeowners policy usually won't cover business equipment fully or any professional claims.

Do you offer court reporter insurance outside California?

Yes. Clients across the country send the same quote form. Sam Alishahi is licensed in 48 states and Washington, DC and places policies there directly. In Florida and Washington, where Sam's licenses are still being issued, a partner agency in your state helps in the meantime. The shopping across carriers works the same way. Rules, minimums and markets differ by state — see insurance requirements by state.
