A campus, a board and a duty of care
A school is a campus full of minors, a board that makes hiring and expulsion decisions, and a payroll of teachers, coaches and bus drivers. Its claims are playground and sports injuries, abuse allegations, discrimination and wrongful discipline suits against the board, and the ordinary property losses of a building used by hundreds of people a day.
The nonprofit programs I use write private and charter K-12 schools with educators' liability and abuse coverage built in, and many add student accident coverage. They want enrollment, grades served, athletics, transportation, background-check practice and loss runs.
- General liabilityStudents, parents and visitors on campus.
- Educators' legal liabilityDiscipline, discrimination and employment claims.
- Abuse and molestationRequired by most authorizers and parents.
- Property and D&OBuildings, equipment and the board's decisions.

School insurance, answered
Does a charter school need its own policy?
Yes. A charter is its own nonprofit corporation, and the authorizer's agreement sets the limits and the additional insureds it must carry.
What is educators' legal liability?
Coverage for claims that the school or its staff failed in their educational duties: discipline, special-education decisions, discrimination and similar suits.
Is student accident coverage required?
Not by law in most cases, but athletics programs and many authorizers expect it. It pays medical bills regardless of fault and keeps small injuries from becoming liability claims.
Are volunteers and coaches covered?
They can be named as insureds on the liability policy. Abuse coverage should extend to them too, with background checks on everyone who works with students.
Do you offer private and charter school insurance outside California?
Yes. Clients across the country send the same quote form. Sam Alishahi is licensed in 49 states and Washington, DC and places policies there directly. In Florida, where Sam's licenses are still being issued, a partner agency in your state helps in the meantime. The shopping across carriers works the same way.
