How it works

A farm is a home and a business

A farm policy combines the farmhouse, barns and outbuildings, equipment, livestock and farm liability, because a homeowners or standard business policy doesn't fit a working farm. Wildfire exposure in rural California makes property placement harder, just as it does for homes.

Agricultural workers' comp has its own class codes and specialty markets, and seasonal payroll matters. I place farm and ranch coverage with carriers that write California agriculture.

Questions

Farm insurance, answered

Does a homeowners policy cover a small farm?

Usually not once there's a farming business. A farm policy covers the operation, equipment and farm liability.

Is farm workers' comp different?

Agricultural work has its own class codes, and seasonal payroll affects the premium. Some carriers specialize in it.

Can crop losses be insured?

Crop insurance is a separate program written by specialized agents. I focus on the property, liability, equipment and workers' comp.

What do underwriters rate on?

Location and wildfire exposure, operations, property and equipment values, payroll and claims history.

Do you offer farm insurance outside California?

Yes. Clients across the country send the same quote form. California policies are placed directly; outside California the request is handled together with a partner agency in your state, and the shopping across carriers works the same way. Rules, minimums and markets differ by state — see insurance requirements by state.
