Minors, volunteers and borrowed space
Youth programs run in school cafeterias, church halls and community centers they do not own, with a mix of paid staff and volunteers supervising minors. The claims are injuries during activities, allegations against adults in the program, and the host facility asking to be named on the policy.
The nonprofit programs I use write after-school programs, youth development services and group mentoring with abuse coverage built in. One-on-one mentoring is accepted when it happens in a community setting, and the program's screening and supervision practice decides the quote.
- General liabilityActivities, outings and the host facility as additional insured.
- Abuse and molestationEvery adult who works with minors.
- Participant accidentMedical bills for a hurt child, regardless of fault.
- Hired and non-owned autoStaff and volunteers driving kids.
What underwriters will ask
Having these ready means I can go to market on the first call. The quote form asks for the same things, and anything you don’t know yet can wait.
- Program: activities, ages served and hours.
- Sites: where you meet and what each host requires.
- Adults: staff, volunteers, background checks and supervision ratios.
- Mentoring: group or one-on-one, and where it happens.
- Transport: vans, drivers and volunteers' cars.
- History: current policies and loss runs.
Youth program insurance, answered
The school wants to be an additional insured. Is that normal?
Yes. Host facilities almost always ask for it, and the certificate is issued from the liability policy at no extra cost on most programs.
Do we need abuse coverage if everyone is background-checked?
Yes. Screening reduces the risk and improves the quote; it does not replace the coverage, and funders expect both.
Is one-on-one mentoring insurable?
When it happens in a community setting, such as a library or the program's own space. Mentoring in private homes is harder to place, so tell me how your program runs.
Can volunteers be covered when they drive kids?
Hired and non-owned auto protects the organization. The volunteer's own auto policy pays first, so I check that drivers carry it.
Do you offer after-school and youth program insurance outside California?
Yes. Clients across the country send the same quote form. Sam Alishahi is licensed in 49 states and Washington, DC and places policies there directly. In Florida, where Sam's licenses are still being issued, a partner agency in your state helps in the meantime. The shopping across carriers works the same way.
