Coffee shop coverage, from the espresso machine out.
Property, liability, equipment breakdown, spoilage and workers' comp for coffee shops, cafes, espresso bars and coffee carts.

Small shop, expensive equipment
Most coffee shop claims are everyday ones: a customer burned by a spilled drink, a slip on a wet floor by the counter, a barista cut or burned on shift. Then there's the equipment. When the espresso machine or the walk-in fails, you're closed or pouring out milk, and a basic property policy may not cover a mechanical breakdown.
Many coffee shops fit a business owner's policy that bundles property, liability and lost income. I add equipment breakdown and spoilage where they fit, and set limits to meet your lease and any sidewalk seating requirements.
- Business owner's policyProperty, liability and business income bundled for eligible cafes.
- Equipment breakdownEspresso machines, grinders, refrigeration and ovens.
- SpoilageMilk, pastries and food lost when refrigeration or power fails.
- Workers' compRequired in California for employers, even with one barista.
What underwriters will ask
Having these ready means I can go to market on the first call. The quote form asks for the same things, and anything you don’t know yet can wait.
- The shop: square footage, seats, indoor and outdoor, and hours.
- Menu: coffee, food prep, cooking equipment and any alcohol.
- Equipment: espresso machines, roasters, refrigeration and their values.
- Sales: annual sales, including catering and wholesale.
- Staff: number of employees and annual payroll.
- Lease and history: insurance requirements, current policy and loss runs.
Coffee shop insurance, answered
Does insurance cover a customer burned by hot coffee?
General liability is what responds to customer injury claims, including burns from drinks you serve, subject to the policy's terms. It's one of the most common claims coffee shops see.
Is my espresso machine covered if it breaks down?
Not always. Standard property coverage often excludes mechanical and electrical breakdown. Equipment breakdown coverage is usually added to cover the repair and, depending on the policy, lost income while you're closed.
Can a coffee shop get a business owner's policy?
Many can. Cafes with heavy cooking, on-site roasting or alcohol sales may need a different carrier or separate property and liability policies.
Do I need special coverage for sidewalk seating?
Cities that permit outdoor dining commonly require a certificate of insurance naming the city as additional insured. Your general liability policy can usually provide it once I know the permit's requirements.
Is workers' comp required for a coffee shop?
Yes. California requires employers to carry workers' compensation, even with one employee, including part-time baristas.
Do you offer coffee shop insurance outside California?
Yes. Clients across the country send the same quote form. California policies are placed directly; outside California the request is handled together with a partner agency in your state, and the shopping across carriers works the same way. Rules, minimums and markets differ by state — see insurance requirements by state.
Tell me about the shop. I'll shop it.
Your menu, equipment and payroll are enough to start.
