How it works

Fittings, salt and service routes

A water treatment dealer's biggest claim is usually a leak: a fitting on a softener or RO line that lets go under a sink or in a garage and soaks floors and cabinets. Because the system stays in the home, that exposure lasts as long as the install does.

Many dealers also rent or lease units and run salt and filter routes. I cover the equipment out on rental, the vans on the route and the techs doing the work.

  • General liabilityLeaks and damage after install.
  • Equipment on rentalUnits in customers' homes.
  • Commercial autoService and salt delivery vans.
  • Workers' compLifting salt and tank work.

Questions

Water treatment insurance, answered

Is a leak from a softener I installed covered?

Completed work coverage often responds to water damage your install causes, subject to the policy terms.

Are my rental units covered in customers' homes?

Not by a basic property policy. I add equipment coverage for units off your premises.

Do I need a contractor's license?

Installing plumbing connections on jobs above the minor work limit generally needs a CSLB license. Check your classification with the board.

What about health claims about water quality?

Claims based on what you promised a system would remove can raise professional and product questions. Tell me what you sell.

Do you offer water treatment dealer insurance outside California?

Yes. Clients across the country send the same quote form. Sam Alishahi is licensed in 48 states and Washington, DC and places policies there directly. In Florida and Washington, where Sam's licenses are still being issued, a partner agency in your state helps in the meantime. The shopping across carriers works the same way. Rules, minimums and markets differ by state — see insurance requirements by state.
