How it works

Chlorine, acid and advice

A pool supply store stores chlorine, acid and other oxidizers that can react, give off toxic gas or start a fire if they get wet or mixed. Insurers ask how chemicals are separated, stacked and ventilated before they quote. Customers also bring in water samples and act on your advice, and some stores sell pumps, heaters and spas that staff install.

I write the store, its chemical stock and its product liability together, and add service and install work if your crew goes out to customers' backyards.

Questions

Pool supply store insurance, answered

Is a chemical fire in my store covered?

Fire is usually a covered cause of loss, subject to the policy. Insurers ask about chemical storage up front, and how you store it can decide which markets will quote.

What if a customer is hurt by chlorine I sold?

Product liability often responds to claims about products you sell, subject to the policy terms. Labels and handling advice matter.

Does water testing advice create liability?

It can. If a customer follows your dosing advice and is hurt, the claim may name the store. I ask about testing so the policy reflects it.

Do I need pollution coverage?

Most general liability policies exclude pollution. A chemical release that affects neighbors or the ground may need a pollution endorsement.

Do you offer pool supply store insurance outside California?

Yes. Clients across the country send the same quote form. Sam Alishahi is licensed in 48 states and Washington, DC and places policies there directly. In Florida and Washington, where Sam's licenses are still being issued, a partner agency in your state helps in the meantime. The shopping across carriers works the same way. Rules, minimums and markets differ by state — see insurance requirements by state.
