How it works

Garments that leave and come back

Rental shops own garments that spend much of the year in customers' hands. Stock comes back damaged or stained, or not at all, and wedding and prom seasons push values and foot traffic to a peak.

I look for property that covers your garments away from the store, not just on the racks, plus general liability for fittings and the showroom. Shops with tailoring, cleaning or steaming equipment get that on the policy too.

  • PropertyRental stock at the store.
  • Off-premisesGarments out with customers.
  • General liabilityFitting room and showroom injuries.
  • EquipmentPressing, steaming and sewing machines.

Questions

Rental shop insurance, answered

Are garments covered while they're rented out?

Only if the policy covers property away from your premises. Many standard store policies limit it, so I check.

What about garments that are never returned?

Property insurance usually doesn't cover that. Deposits and your rental agreement are the main protection.

Do I need coverage for alterations?

If you tailor garments customers own, damage to them is an exposure that can be added.

Can my limits change for prom and wedding season?

Some policies can raise stock limits for set months. Tell me when you're busiest.

Do you offer tuxedo and costume rental insurance outside California?

Yes. Clients across the country send the same quote form. Sam Alishahi is licensed in 48 states and Washington, DC and places policies there directly. In Florida and Washington, where Sam's licenses are still being issued, a partner agency in your state helps in the meantime. The shopping across carriers works the same way. Rules, minimums and markets differ by state — see insurance requirements by state.
