How it works

Seasonal stock, imported products

Gift and party shops carry hundreds of small items, many of them imported, and stock jumps before holidays and graduations. Helium tanks, lit candles and crowded aisles add their own exposures.

I write these shops with property limits that account for the busy months, product liability for what you sell and import, and crime coverage for cash and employee theft. Shoplifting found only in an inventory count is usually excluded, so I say so up front.

  • Store: address, square footage, owner or tenant.

Questions

Gift shop insurance, answered

Am I liable for products I didn't make?

A retailer can be named in a product claim, especially for imported items with no U.S. maker to pursue. Product liability is part of most retail policies, subject to its terms.

Can my stock limit go up for the holidays?

Many policies offer a peak season increase for set months. Tell me your highest month.

Is shoplifting covered?

Usually not when the loss shows up only in an inventory count. A break-in with signs of forced entry is treated differently.

Do helium tanks matter?

Insurers ask about compressed gas storage. Secured, upright tanks help.

Do you offer gift shop insurance outside California?

Yes. Clients across the country send the same quote form. Sam Alishahi is licensed in 48 states and Washington, DC and places policies there directly. In Florida and Washington, where Sam's licenses are still being issued, a partner agency in your state helps in the meantime. The shopping across carriers works the same way. Rules, minimums and markets differ by state — see insurance requirements by state.
