Publish boldly, defend it well.

Media liability for defamation, copyright and privacy claims, plus cyber, property and employment coverage for book, magazine, newspaper and digital publishers.

How it works

Words are the exposure

Publishers get sued over content: a story someone says is false and damaging, a photo used without permission, a memoir that exposes private facts, or a title too close to someone's trademark. Standard general liability forms exclude businesses whose main work is publishing from these claims.

Media liability is built for them, covering defense and settlements for defamation, invasion of privacy and copyright or trademark infringement, subject to the policy. Publishers with subscriber lists and payment data add cyber, and in-house printing adds property and equipment.

  • Cyber liabilitySubscriber data and website breaches.

Before you call

What underwriters will ask

Having these ready means I can go to market on the first call. The quote form asks for the same things, and anything you don’t know yet can wait.

Start the Quote Form

  • Publications: what you publish and how often.
  • Content: news, investigative, opinion, books or reviews.
  • Review: who checks content before it runs.
  • Contributors: staff writers and freelancers.
  • Revenue and payroll: annual figures.
  • History: current policies and any claims or demand letters.
Questions

Publishing insurance, answered

Does general liability cover a libel claim?

Usually not for publishers. Standard general liability forms exclude media businesses from those claims, so media liability fills the gap.

Are freelance writers' pieces covered?

Many media policies extend to freelance work you publish. Some require written contracts with contributors.

Should I report a retraction demand?

Usually yes. Media policies need prompt notice of a claim or demand, and late notice can affect coverage.

Does media liability cover podcasts and social posts?

Many policies cover content in every format you publish, subject to how the policy defines your media.

Do you offer publishing company insurance outside California?

Yes. Clients across the country send the same quote form. Sam Alishahi is licensed in 48 states and Washington, DC and places policies there directly. In Florida and Washington, where Sam's licenses are still being issued, a partner agency in your state helps in the meantime. The shopping across carriers works the same way. Rules, minimums and markets differ by state — see insurance requirements by state.
