Play the gig, send the certificate.

Cables, speakers and venue rules
Most DJs call me because a venue asked for a certificate with the venue named as additional insured. The claims behind that request are simple: a guest trips on a cable run, a speaker stand tips into the crowd, or fog sets off the fire system and empties a ballroom.
Your gear is the other half. General liability doesn't cover your own speakers, controllers and laptop, so I add an equipment policy that follows them to gigs, in the car and in storage. For working DJs, an annual policy is usually simpler than buying one event at a time.

What underwriters will ask
Having these ready means I can go to market on the first call. The quote form asks for the same things, and anything you don’t know yet can wait.
- Gigs: types of events and how many.
- Venues: certificate requirements you've been sent.
- Effects: fog, haze, lighting or pyro.
- Gear: equipment list and values.
- Help: employees or other DJs you hire.
- History: current policies and claims.
DJ insurance, answered
The venue wants to be additional insured. Can you do that?
Yes. Send me the venue's insurance requirements and I'll issue a certificate with the right name and wording, often the same day.
Is my gear covered at a gig?
Not by general liability. An equipment floater covers your gear for theft and damage at gigs, in transit and at home, subject to the policy. Theft from an unattended car often has conditions, so ask.
Should I buy per event or annual?
If you play more than a handful of events a year, an annual policy is usually simpler: certificates as venues ask for them and no gaps between gigs.
Do I need workers' comp?
If you have employees, such as assistants or roadies, California requires it. Solo DJs with no employees often skip it.
Do you offer DJ insurance outside California?
Yes. Clients across the country send the same quote form. Sam Alishahi is licensed in 48 states and Washington, DC and places policies there directly. In Florida and Washington, where Sam's licenses are still being issued, a partner agency in your state helps in the meantime. The shopping across carriers works the same way. Rules, minimums and markets differ by state — see insurance requirements by state.
