Cold cases, slicers and a lunch rush
A deli runs on refrigeration. A compressor failure or a long power outage can empty the cold case overnight. Meat slicers cause some of the worst kitchen cuts, and a busy lunch line means wet floors and full trash cans.
Most delis do little or no frying, which can help with property underwriting. I build a package with property, equipment breakdown, spoilage, general and product liability, plus workers' comp and delivery coverage.
- SpoilageMeats, cheese and prepared food lost to a covered breakdown or outage.
- Equipment breakdownWalk-ins, reach-ins, slicers and ovens.
- Product liabilityFoodborne illness and allergen claims.
- Workers' compSlicer cuts, burns and lifting injuries.
What underwriters will ask
Having these ready means I can go to market on the first call. The quote form asks for the same things, and anything you don’t know yet can wait.
- Shop: address, seating and hours.
- Cooking: grill, fryer or no-cook prep.
- Equipment: walk-ins, slicers and their values.
- Delivery: your drivers or apps only.
- Revenue and payroll: annual figures.
- History: current policies and any past claims.
Deli insurance, answered
Is food lost in a power outage covered?
Spoilage coverage often includes outages, but some policies only cover an outage that starts on your premises. Ask me to check the wording.
Does a fryer change my policy?
Yes. Frying adds fire risk, and insurers will ask about your hood and suppression system.
Are app delivery orders covered?
Your liability for the food usually applies. The driver's car is a separate question if your staff deliver.
Do I need liquor liability for beer and wine?
If you sell alcohol, yes. General liability usually excludes it for businesses that sell it.
Who covers a slicer injury?
Workers' comp covers employee injuries. California requires it once you have employees.
Do you offer deli and sandwich shop insurance outside California?
Yes. Clients across the country send the same quote form. Sam Alishahi is licensed in 48 states and Washington, DC and places policies there directly. In Florida and Washington, where Sam's licenses are still being issued, a partner agency in your state helps in the meantime. The shopping across carriers works the same way. Rules, minimums and markets differ by state — see insurance requirements by state.
