Audiences, rigging and a crowd in the dark
Theaters have audiences moving through dim aisles and stairs, crews working on catwalks and fly systems, and sets built from lumber, paint and lights that run hot. Effects like haze, open flame and pyrotechnics are often excluded or restricted unless you disclose them.
Many California theaters are nonprofits run by a board, so directors and officers coverage matters as much as liability. Venues that rent to outside companies should collect their certificates, and concessions with beer and wine need liquor liability.

What underwriters will ask
Having these ready means I can go to market on the first call. The quote form asks for the same things, and anything you don’t know yet can wait.
- Venue: address, seats and who owns the building.
- Shows: how many performances each year, and outside renters.
- Effects: haze, flame, pyrotechnics or flying performers.
- Alcohol: ABC license type and how drinks are sold.
- People: paid cast and crew, volunteers and board.
- History: current policies and claims.
Theater insurance, answered
Are volunteers covered by workers' comp?
Not automatically. A nonprofit board can elect to cover volunteers under workers' comp in California, and volunteer accident coverage is another option.
Do pyrotechnics or stage flame need special coverage?
Usually yes. Many policies exclude them unless disclosed, and the local fire authority often requires permits.
What about outside companies renting our stage?
Require their own liability certificate naming you, or arrange event coverage for them. Your policy may not cover their show.
Is a cancelled show covered?
Cancellation after a covered property loss can fall under business income. Other reasons need separate event cancellation coverage.
Do you offer theater insurance outside California?
Yes. Clients across the country send the same quote form. Sam Alishahi is licensed in 48 states and Washington, DC and places policies there directly. In Florida and Washington, where Sam's licenses are still being issued, a partner agency in your state helps in the meantime. The shopping across carriers works the same way. Send your venue details. I'll shop it.
Seats, number of shows and alcohol details are enough to start.
