Burglary, batteries and installs
Electronics stores are a top target for smash-and-grab burglary, and a single night can wipe out weeks of stock. Insurers look closely at your alarm, display setup and where inventory sits after closing. Lithium batteries add a fire question that didn't exist a few years ago.
The other half is what happens after the sale. Appliance stores deliver and install, phone stores transfer data and handle customers' devices, and some stores sell extended service plans. Each of those needs to be on the application so the right coverage is in place.
- Property and theftInventory, displays and burglary loss.
- Product liabilityBattery fires and faulty devices you sell.
- CyberCustomer data on devices and in your systems.
- Commercial autoDelivery and install vans.
What underwriters will ask
Having these ready means I can go to market on the first call. The quote form asks for the same things, and anything you don’t know yet can wait.
- Store: address, type of products and square footage.
- Stock: peak inventory value and how it's stored at night.
- Security: central-station alarm, cameras, gates or safes.
- Services: repairs, data transfer, delivery or installation.
- Vehicles: delivery vans and drivers.
- Revenue and payroll: annual figures and loss history.
Electronics store insurance, answered
Is shoplifting covered?
Many property forms exclude unexplained inventory shortage, which is how most shoplifting shows up. Burglary with visible signs of forced entry is treated differently. I'll show you which way your policy reads.
What if a battery I sold starts a fire in a customer's home?
That's a product liability claim. Your policy can respond, subject to its terms, and the maker's insurer may share it. Keep records of where your stock comes from.
Does installing appliances change my coverage?
Yes. Installation is work at the customer's home, so completed-work and property-damage questions come up. Tell me if your team hooks up gas or water lines.
I sell extended service plans. Is that insurance?
In California, sellers of service contracts register with the Bureau of Household Goods and Services. That's separate from your own business insurance, but I ask so nothing is missed.
Do you offer electronics store insurance outside California?
Yes. Clients across the country send the same quote form. Sam Alishahi is licensed in 48 states and Washington, DC and places policies there directly. In Florida and Washington, where Sam's licenses are still being issued, a partner agency in your state helps in the meantime. The shopping across carriers works the same way. Rules, minimums and markets differ by state — see insurance requirements by state.
