Cold rooms, saws and fresh product
A butcher shop's inventory spoils within hours of a power outage or a compressor failure. Spoilage and equipment breakdown coverage are the first things I look at, sized to what's in your walk-ins and display cases on a Friday.
Behind the counter, band saws, grinders and slicers cause most workplace injuries, and the cold floor adds slips. In front, customers can bring illness claims from meat or seafood. I build a package around refrigeration, liability for what you sell, and workers' comp that reflects real cutting work.
- SpoilageMeat and seafood lost to power or cooler failure.
- Equipment breakdownCompressors, walk-ins, saws and grinders.
- Product liabilityFoodborne illness and foreign object claims.
- Workers' compCuts, lifting injuries and cold-room slips.
What underwriters will ask
Having these ready means I can go to market on the first call. The quote form asks for the same things, and anything you don’t know yet can wait.
- Shop: address, square footage and hours.
- Products: meat, poultry, seafood, prepared foods.
- Refrigeration: walk-ins, alarms and backup power.
- Processing: saws, grinders, smoking or curing.
- Revenue and payroll: annual figures.
- History: current policy and any claims.
Butcher shop insurance, answered
Is spoilage from a utility outage covered?
Only if the policy includes off-premises power or utility interruption with spoilage. Many basic policies cover a breakdown inside your shop but not a grid outage, so I add it where markets offer it.
Do I need different coverage for seafood?
Seafood brings its own illness exposures and federal and state food safety rules. Tell me if you sell raw shellfish or sushi-grade fish so the product liability is written for it.
My cutters use band saws. Will comp cost more?
Retail meat and seafood stores have their own workers' comp classification in California, separate from general retail. Accurate payroll, with office clerical staff reported separately, keeps your audit clean and your cost fair.
What about sales to restaurants?
Wholesale accounts often require product liability and additional insured status. I'll quote to their requirements.
Do you offer butcher shop insurance outside California?
Yes. Clients across the country send the same quote form. Sam Alishahi is licensed in 48 states and Washington, DC and places policies there directly. In Florida and Washington, where Sam's licenses are still being issued, a partner agency in your state helps in the meantime. The shopping across carriers works the same way. Rules, minimums and markets differ by state — see insurance requirements by state.
Insure your meat or seafood market.
Tell me about your cases, cold rooms and cutters, and I'll compare markets that write butcher shops.
