How it works

Allergens, imports and a cooler you can't lose

Specialty food shops sell a lot of what people are allergic to: tree nuts, peanuts, milk, wheat and sesame, often scooped from bulk bins or cut to order. Many products are imported, and if a cheese or candy makes someone sick and the maker is overseas, the shop is the one in reach. A failed cheese cave or display case can wipe out stock overnight.

I place specialty food stores with property and stock, spoilage and equipment breakdown for the refrigeration, and product and general liability. Shops that also make candy, roast nuts or pack gift boxes get that disclosed up front so the coverage fits what actually happens in the back room.

  • Product liabilityAllergen and illness claims from food you sell.
  • SpoilageCheese, chocolate and perishables lost to a cooler failure.
  • Equipment breakdownDisplay cases, walk-ins and slicers.
  • PropertyStore, fixtures and specialty inventory.

Questions

Specialty food store insurance, answered

Am I liable for an imported product?

You can be. If the maker is overseas, the importer and seller are often the ones named. Product liability can respond, subject to the policy terms.

Is spoiled cheese covered after a power outage?

With spoilage coverage, often yes. Some policies only cover outages that start on your premises, so I check the wording.

Does making candy on site change things?

Yes. Manufacturing adds product and fire exposure, and insurers rate it differently from resale. Tell me what's made in-house.

Do online orders need separate coverage?

Shipping food across state lines adds product and shipping questions. I list online sales on the application so the policy covers them.

Do you offer specialty food store insurance outside California?

Yes. Clients across the country send the same quote form. Sam Alishahi is licensed in 48 states and Washington, DC and places policies there directly. In Florida and Washington, where Sam's licenses are still being issued, a partner agency in your state helps in the meantime. The shopping across carriers works the same way. Rules, minimums and markets differ by state — see insurance requirements by state.
