How it works

High-value stock in a small space

Leather and luggage stores keep a lot of value on a few shelves. Designer handbags, wallets and hard-shell luggage are targets for shoplifting and smash-and-grab theft, and leather is easily ruined by smoke and water from a fire next door. Stock swells before the holidays and travel season.

I write a retail package around that: property with a peak-season bump, crime coverage for employee theft, general and product liability for what you sell, and coverage for bags left for repair, cleaning or monogramming. If you also sell online, I make sure the shipped orders are part of the plan.

  • PropertyStock, fixtures and improvements, with a peak-season bump.
  • CrimeEmployee theft and cash losses.
  • Product liabilityLuggage, bags and accessories you sell.
  • Customers' goodsItems left for repair or monogramming.

Questions

Leather goods store insurance, answered

Does my policy cover shoplifting?

Theft is often covered on a commercial property form, subject to the policy. Shortages found only at inventory count, with no evidence of a theft, are usually excluded.

What about theft by an employee?

Property policies usually exclude it. Commercial crime coverage can cover employee theft of stock or cash.

Is my holiday and travel-season stock covered?

A peak-season endorsement raises your stock limit for the months you carry more. Tell me when stock peaks and by how much.

Are bags left for repair covered?

General liability excludes customers' property in your care. Customers' goods coverage can cover fire or theft of those items while they're with you, subject to the policy.

Do you offer leather goods store insurance outside California?

Yes. Clients across the country send the same quote form. Sam Alishahi is licensed in 48 states and Washington, DC and places policies there directly. In Florida and Washington, where Sam's licenses are still being issued, a partner agency in your state helps in the meantime. The shopping across carriers works the same way. Rules, minimums and markets differ by state — see insurance requirements by state.
