Showroom, warehouse and install crews
A flooring store holds a lot of value in heavy, stacked inventory. Carpet rolls, pallets of tile and boxed hardwood need property limits that rise with your busy season, and the warehouse brings forklift and lifting injuries.
Most stores also install, either with their own crew or through subcontractors. That changes the risk: a failed floor or a water line hit during install can lead to a liability claim. In California, carpet, vinyl and wood installers usually need the CSLB C-15 license, and ceramic tile falls under C-54. I write the store and the installation work together so nothing falls between policies.

What underwriters will ask
Having these ready means I can go to market on the first call. The quote form asks for the same things, and anything you don’t know yet can wait.
- Store: showroom and warehouse addresses.
- Inventory: average and peak values.
- Installation: own crew, subcontractors or none.
- License: CSLB number and classes, if you install.
- Vehicles: vans, trucks and drivers.
- Revenue and payroll: sales and install split.
Flooring store insurance, answered
Does a retail policy cover my installers?
Not always. Many retail policies exclude or limit installation work. I make sure the liability names installation and that subcontractors carry their own coverage.
What if flooring I sold fails?
Claims for injury or damage caused by a product you sold can fall under product liability, subject to the policy terms. Replacing the defective flooring itself is usually not covered.
Is my inventory covered on a delivery truck?
Property in transit often needs its own coverage. I add it if you deliver.
Do I need a contractor license to sell flooring?
Not to sell it. Installing it for customers in California generally requires a CSLB license once a job passes the minor work limit.
Do you offer flooring store insurance outside California?
Yes. Clients across the country send the same quote form. Sam Alishahi is licensed in 48 states and Washington, DC and places policies there directly. In Florida and Washington, where Sam's licenses are still being issued, a partner agency in your state helps in the meantime. The shopping across carriers works the same way. Rules, minimums and markets differ by state — see insurance requirements by state.
