A pizzeria is a kitchen and a delivery fleet
Pizza shops carry two risks most restaurants don't. Ovens run hot for hours every day, and drivers are on the road every night. Carriers ask about both before they quote.
Personal auto policies typically don't cover cars used for commercial purposes. When your drivers use their own cars, I look at hired and non-owned auto so the shop isn't left exposed after a delivery accident.
I match your shop to carriers that write pizzerias, then set limits to fit your lease, your franchise agreement and your beer and wine license.
- Business owner's policyProperty, general liability and business income in one policy for eligible shops.
- Hired and non-owned autoProtects the shop when an employee's own car is in an accident on a delivery.
- Workers' compRequired in California for employers, even with one employee.
- Spoilage and equipment breakdownWalk-in coolers, mixers and ovens that stop working.
What underwriters will ask
Having these ready means I can go to market on the first call. The quote form asks for the same things, and anything you don’t know yet can wait.
- The shop: locations, seats, hours and square footage.
- Ovens: deck, conveyor or wood-fired, plus fryers.
- Fire protection: hood suppression and how often hoods are cleaned.
- Delivery: own drivers' cars, company cars or apps only, and how many drivers.
- Sales and staff: annual sales, beer and wine share, and payroll.
- Current policy: declarations and loss runs.
Pizza shop insurance, answered
Does my car insurance cover pizza delivery?
Often it doesn't. The California Department of Insurance has said personal auto policies typically don't cover vehicles used for commercial purposes. Drivers should ask their own insurer how their policy treats delivery work.
What is pizza delivery driver insurance?
For the shop, it's usually hired and non-owned auto. It responds to claims against the business when an employee's own car is in an accident during a delivery. It doesn't fix the driver's car or replace the driver's own auto policy.
What insurance does a pizza shop need?
Most pizzerias start with a business owner's policy, workers' comp and hired and non-owned auto if staff deliver. Many add spoilage, equipment breakdown, liquor liability for beer and wine, and an umbrella for higher limits.
Do pizza shops need workers' comp in California?
Yes. California requires employers to carry workers' comp, even with one employee. That includes kitchen staff and drivers who are your employees.
Does a wood-fired oven change my insurance?
Carriers ask about oven type, hood fire suppression and how often hoods and ducts are cleaned. NFPA 96 is the fire standard for commercial kitchen ventilation, so keep your cleaning and inspection records.
Do I need liquor liability if I only sell beer and wine?
If you serve alcohol, liquor liability covers claims tied to serving it, and many landlords ask for it. In California, restaurants that sell beer and wine usually hold an ABC Type 41 license, which requires servers and their managers to be RBS certified.
Do I need delivery coverage if I only use delivery apps?
Carriers still ask how orders reach customers. If staff never drive for the shop, hired and non-owned auto matters less, but errands like bank runs and catering drop-offs count too. Tell me how you deliver and I'll match it.
Do you offer pizza shop insurance outside California?
Yes. Clients across the country send the same quote form. California policies are placed directly; outside California the request is handled together with a partner agency in your state, and the shopping across carriers works the same way. Rules, minimums and markets differ by state — see insurance requirements by state.
