Rated on who you serve and who serves them
A group home is judged on three things: the residents' needs, the staff who care for them and the building they live in. Claims come from falls, elopement, medication errors, resident-on-resident incidents and abuse allegations, which is why professional and abuse coverage sit next to the general liability policy rather than inside it.
The nonprofit and human services programs I use want the facility license, the census and levels of care, staffing ratios and background-check practice, and 4 years of loss runs without a gap. They are written for nonprofit operators; a for-profit home goes to a different market, and a new operator without that history is placed on a program that takes new ventures.
- General liabilityVisitors, premises and everyday operations.
- Professional liabilityCare decisions, supervision and medication.
- Abuse and molestationResidents who cannot protect themselves.
- Workers' compDirect support staff on every shift.
What underwriters will ask
Having these ready means I can go to market on the first call. The quote form asks for the same things, and anything you don’t know yet can wait.
- License: facility type, license number and licensed capacity.
- Residents: census, ages and levels of care.
- Staff: headcount, payroll, ratios and background checks.
- Entity: nonprofit or for-profit, which decides the market.
- Building: owned or leased, sprinklers and alarms.
- History: 4 years of loss runs with no gaps, or how long you have operated.
Group home insurance, answered
Does it matter that we are a nonprofit?
Yes, for the market. The human services programs with the broadest coverage are written for nonprofit operators. A for-profit home is placed with a carrier that writes it, and I say which before anything is submitted.
We opened last year. Can we get a program policy?
The main programs want 4 years of continuous loss runs, so a new home goes to a market that takes new ventures, and moves to the program once the history is there.
Is abuse coverage included?
Not in a standard liability policy. I add abuse and molestation coverage; licensing and placing agencies usually require it.
What about our vans?
Resident transport is rated as commercial auto with the human services exposure on top. Driver records on every driver.
Do you offer group home insurance outside California?
Yes. Clients across the country send the same quote form. Sam Alishahi is licensed in 49 states and Washington, DC and places policies there directly. In Florida, where Sam's licenses are still being issued, a partner agency in your state helps in the meantime. The shopping across carriers works the same way.
