Commercial umbrella for the contract that asks for more.
Extra liability limits that sit over your general liability, commercial auto and employer's liability policies, for larger contracts and larger claims.

Limits stacked on top
A serious auto accident or injury claim can exceed the $1 million limit on a typical business policy. A commercial umbrella pays above your underlying policies once their limits are used up, and can drop down in some situations the underlying policies don't cover.
Owners, general contractors and public agencies often require $2 million, $5 million or more. Umbrella carriers set minimum limits on the underlying policies, so I line up your liability, auto and workers' comp so the umbrella attaches without gaps.
- General liabilityUmbrella limits sit above your general liability per-occurrence limit.
- Commercial autoOften the most important layer, since auto claims can be the largest.
- Employer's liabilityThe liability part of your workers' comp policy.
- Underlying limitsThe minimum limits the umbrella carrier requires below it.
What underwriters will ask
Having these ready means I can go to market on the first call. The quote form asks for the same things, and anything you don’t know yet can wait.
- Underlying policies: general liability, auto and workers' comp declarations.
- Requirement: the limit your contract or lender requires.
- Operations: what your business does.
- Vehicles: number and type.
- Revenue and payroll: annual totals.
- Claims: loss runs for the last five years.
Commercial umbrella insurance, answered
What's the difference between umbrella and excess liability?
Both add limits above your policies. An umbrella can sometimes cover claims the underlying policies don't, while an excess policy generally follows the underlying coverage exactly.
How much umbrella coverage does a business need?
Often whatever your largest contract requires, commonly $1 million to $5 million, plus what your assets and exposure justify.
Does a commercial umbrella cover workers' comp?
It sits above employer's liability, the part of a workers' comp policy covering lawsuits, not above statutory workers' comp benefits.
Can I get an umbrella with a different carrier than my other policies?
Often yes, as long as your underlying policies meet the umbrella carrier's minimum limits and requirements.
Do you offer commercial umbrella insurance outside California?
Yes. Clients across the country send the same quote form. California policies are placed directly; outside California the request is handled together with a partner agency in your state, and the shopping across carriers works the same way. Rules, minimums and markets differ by state — see insurance requirements by state.
Send the contract requirement. I'll shop it.
