Property, fryer fire and hood systems, spoilage, product and general liability, and workers' comp for donut shops that fry, bake or both.

Hot oil, early hours and a busy counter
A donut shop runs on hot oil. Insurers look first at whether you fry on site, how the fryers sit under the hood, and whether the hood has a fire suppression system that's serviced on schedule. Shops that only finish and glaze donuts made elsewhere are seen differently from shops that fry all night.
Most of my donut shop clients are family businesses in a strip center, open before dawn with a small crew. I usually build a package with the building or tenant improvements, fryers and display cases, spoilage, and liability for the counter and the food, then add workers' comp for anyone on payroll, family members included when they're paid.
- PropertyFryers, proofers, display cases and improvements.
- Fire from cookingHood, duct and fryer fires, subject to the policy.
- Product liabilityAllergen, foreign object and illness claims.
- Workers' compBurns, slips and cuts on the overnight shift.
What underwriters will ask
Having these ready means I can go to market on the first call. The quote form asks for the same things, and anything you don’t know yet can wait.
- Shop: address, square footage and hours.
- Frying: on site or not, number of fryers.
- Hood system: suppression type and last service date.
- Sales: walk-in, drive-thru, catering or wholesale.
- Revenue and payroll: annual figures.
- History: current policy and any claims.
Donut shop insurance, answered
Does it matter that I fry on site?
Yes. Frying is the biggest fire exposure in the shop, so insurers ask about it first and price the property around it. A serviced hood suppression system and clean ducts make a real difference to who will quote.
What if my fryer fire damages the shop next door?
Your general liability can respond to damage you cause to others' property, subject to the policy terms. Your lease may also require you to name the landlord.
Are my family members covered for injuries?
California requires workers' comp for employees, and family members on payroll are generally treated as employees. Some owners, partners and corporate officers can be excluded or included depending on how the business is set up, so I check that with you.
What about the donuts I sell to coffee shops?
Wholesale accounts often ask to be added as additional insureds and want proof of product liability. Tell me who you supply and I'll match their requirements.
Do you offer donut shop insurance outside California?
Yes. Clients across the country send the same quote form. Sam Alishahi is licensed in 48 states and Washington, DC and places policies there directly. In Florida and Washington, where Sam's licenses are still being issued, a partner agency in your state helps in the meantime. The shopping across carriers works the same way. Rules, minimums and markets differ by state — see insurance requirements by state.
