Glass-walled house with a pool

Shelves full of paper.

Property for book and magazine inventory, general liability for browsing customers and author events, business income and workers' comp for bookstores and newsstands.

How it works

Water, fire and story time

Paper is the problem. A sprinkler head, a roof leak or a neighbor's burst pipe can ruin shelves of books that can't be dried and resold. Used and rare book dealers also need their stock valued fairly, not at a flat retail figure.

Bookstores are also event spaces. Readings, signings and children's story hours bring crowds, and some stores add a cafe. I build the general liability around those events.

Before you call

What underwriters will ask

Having these ready means I can go to market on the first call. The quote form asks for the same things, and anything you don’t know yet can wait.

Start the Quote Form

  • Store: address, square footage and sprinklers.
  • Stock: value of new, used and rare books.
  • Events: readings, signings, crowd size.
  • Extras: cafe, online sales or kids' programs.
  • Revenue and payroll: annual figures.
  • History: current policies and claims.
Questions

Bookstore insurance, answered

Is water damage to books covered?

Sudden water damage, like a burst pipe or sprinkler release, is often covered, subject to the policy. Flood and slow leaks usually aren't.

How do I value rare books?

Schedule high-value items or keep appraisals. A blanket inventory limit may not reflect their worth.

Do author events need special event coverage?

Usually your general liability covers in-store events. Off-site festivals or large crowds may need more.

I sell coffee too. Does that change things?

Yes. Food service adds questions and possibly coverage. Tell me up front.

Do you offer bookstore insurance outside California?

Yes. Clients across the country send the same quote form. Sam Alishahi is licensed in 48 states and Washington, DC and places policies there directly. In Florida and Washington, where Sam's licenses are still being issued, a partner agency in your state helps in the meantime. The shopping across carriers works the same way. Rules, minimums and markets differ by state — see insurance requirements by state.
