How it works

Torches, shows and metal content

Jewelry makers work with torches, kilns, casting equipment and polishing wheels, which makes fire and injury real questions in a small studio. Inventory moves constantly: to craft fairs, to buyers, through the mail. A jewelers block or inland marine form follows it in a way a home or shop policy usually won't.

Product questions come up too. A skin reaction to a metal, a clasp that fails, or a claim about gold content can all turn into claims. California also limits lead in jewelry, especially pieces made for children, so I ask what metals and findings you use.

Questions

Jewelry maker insurance, answered

Does my homeowners policy cover my jewelry business?

Usually only a small amount of business property, and not items for sale or at shows. A business policy is the usual fix.

Is my stock covered at a craft fair?

Only if the policy covers property away from your premises. Many show organizers also ask for a liability certificate.

What if a customer reacts to a metal?

That's a product liability claim, subject to the policy terms. Clear labeling of metals and plating helps.

Are stones I'm cutting for a client covered?

Customers' stones need property-of-others coverage. Tell me how much client material you hold at once.

Do you offer jewelry maker insurance outside California?

Yes. Clients across the country send the same quote form. Sam Alishahi is licensed in 48 states and Washington, DC and places policies there directly. In Florida and Washington, where Sam's licenses are still being issued, a partner agency in your state helps in the meantime. The shopping across carriers works the same way. Rules, minimums and markets differ by state — see insurance requirements by state.
