Live animals change the policy
A pet store is a retail store with a twist: some of the stock is alive. Fish, reptiles, birds and small animals depend on pumps, heaters and lighting, and a failed system can wipe out a room overnight. Customers handle animals too, so bites, scratches and illnesses from reptiles are real liability questions.
I place a retail package that lists the live-animal side honestly: property for supplies and fixtures, product liability for food, treats and toys, general liability for the shop floor, and equipment breakdown for tank and terrarium systems. Live animals are often limited on standard property forms, so I ask about that coverage directly.

What underwriters will ask
Having these ready means I can go to market on the first call. The quote form asks for the same things, and anything you don’t know yet can wait.
- Store: address, square feet and owned or leased.
- Stock: supplies vs. live animals, and their values.
- Services: grooming, self-wash or adoption events.
- Systems: tank and terrarium setups, backup power.
- Sales and payroll: annual figures.
- History: current policies and claims.
Pet store insurance, answered
Are the fish and reptiles covered as property?
Live animals are often excluded or limited on standard property forms. Some policies add a sublimit for animals held for sale; I ask for it and show you the wording, subject to the policy.
Can I sell puppies or kittens?
No. California pet stores can't sell dogs, cats or rabbits. Stores can provide space for shelters and rescue groups to show animals for adoption, and I note those events on the application.
What if a customer is bitten in my store?
General liability usually responds to a customer's injury on your premises, subject to the policy. Keep animals that bite in closed displays and log incidents.
Does a pet food recall hit my policy?
Product liability covers injury or damage claims from products you sell; the maker is usually first in line. The cost of pulling recalled stock off shelves is generally separate recall coverage.
Do you offer pet store insurance outside California?
Yes. Clients across the country send the same quote form. Sam Alishahi is licensed in 48 states and Washington, DC and places policies there directly. In Florida and Washington, where Sam's licenses are still being issued, a partner agency in your state helps in the meantime. The shopping across carriers works the same way.
