Stock that walks and floors that get busy
A clothing store's biggest asset usually hangs on the racks. Inventory swings with the season, so a stock limit that fits in March can fall short in November. Shoplifting, a break-in after hours, or a sprinkler leak over the stockroom are the losses I see most.
On the liability side, it's customers: a slip near the fitting rooms, a fixture that tips, a mirror that falls. I usually start with a business owner's policy and add crime, cyber for the online store and workers' comp once you have staff.
- Business personal propertyInventory, racks, mannequins and the point-of-sale system.
- General liabilityCustomer injuries in the store and at pop-up events.
- Seasonal stockHigher limits during holiday and peak buying months, subject to the policy.
- Business incomeLost income while the store is closed after a covered loss.
What underwriters will ask
Having these ready means I can go to market on the first call. The quote form asks for the same things, and anything you don’t know yet can wait.
- Store: address, square footage and lease terms.
- Inventory: average stock value and holiday peak.
- Security: alarm, cameras and after-hours lock-up.
- Online sales: share of revenue from your website.
- Staff: number of employees and annual payroll.
- History: current policy and any past claims.
Clothing store insurance, answered
Is shoplifting covered?
Many store policies limit or exclude theft that's only discovered by an inventory count. Theft with signs of forced entry is treated differently. I'll show you what each policy says.
What if I carry more stock in the holidays?
A peak season option can raise the stock limit for the busy months, subject to the policy. Tell me your highest inventory month.
Does my landlord need to be on the policy?
Most retail leases ask for general liability with the landlord as additional insured. Send me the insurance section of your lease.
Are pop-up shops and markets covered?
Off-site sales often need the location or event listed. Ask before the event so the certificate is ready.
Do you offer clothing boutique insurance outside California?
Yes. Clients across the country send the same quote form. Sam Alishahi is licensed in 48 states and Washington, DC and places policies there directly. In Florida and Washington, where Sam's licenses are still being issued, a partner agency in your state helps in the meantime. The shopping across carriers works the same way. Rules, minimums and markets differ by state — see insurance requirements by state.
