Body art needs professional liability
The claims tattoo and piercing studios see most are infections, allergic reactions and work a client says was done wrong. Those are professional claims, and a general liability policy alone usually won't cover them.
I place studios and artists with carriers that write body art, including booth renters who need their own policy and shops that require proof from every artist.
- Professional liabilityInfections, reactions and claims about the work.
- General liabilitySlips, falls and injuries in the studio.
- PropertyEquipment, furniture and supplies.
- Workers' compEmployees, if you have them.
What underwriters will ask
Having these ready means I can go to market on the first call. The quote form asks for the same things, and anything you don’t know yet can wait.
- Services: tattoo, piercing, permanent makeup or removal.
- Artists: employees, booth renters and guest artists.
- Registration: your county body art practitioner registrations.
- Clients: roughly how many a year, and your age policy.
- Shop: owned or leased, and equipment values.
- History: current policies and any claims.
Tattoo shop insurance, answered
Does general liability cover an infected tattoo?
Usually not. Claims about the work itself fall under professional liability, which tattoo studios need.
Do booth renters need their own insurance?
Usually yes. A shop's policy often covers only its employees, and many shops require each renter to carry a policy and name the shop.
Does California regulate tattoo artists?
Yes. The Safe Body Art Act requires practitioners to register with their county health department. Carriers ask for it.
Is laser tattoo removal covered?
It can be added, but it's rated separately and some carriers require medical supervision.
Do you offer tattoo shop insurance outside California?
Yes. Clients across the country send the same quote form. California policies are placed directly; outside California the request is handled together with a partner agency in your state, and the shopping across carriers works the same way. Rules, minimums and markets differ by state — see insurance requirements by state.
