Children, tutors and pickup time
Any business that works with children carries abuse and molestation risk, and many general liability policies exclude it. Parents, schools and landlords increasingly ask for proof that it's covered. Learning centers also see everyday claims: a child hurt on the stairs, a slip at pickup, a dispute over results.
I ask how you screen tutors, whether sessions are one-on-one or in view, and whether you drive students anywhere. Many programs fingerprint staff through the California Department of Justice, and state law requires background checks for staff at youth service organizations. That kind of screening matters to underwriters.
- General liabilityStudent and parent injuries on site.
- Abuse and molestationOften excluded unless added.
- Professional liabilityClaims about instruction or results.
- Student accidentMedical costs for minor injuries.
What underwriters will ask
Having these ready means I can go to market on the first call. The quote form asks for the same things, and anything you don’t know yet can wait.
- Program: tutoring, test prep or after-school care.
- Students: ages and number enrolled.
- Staff: employees, contractors and background checks.
- Sessions: on site, in homes or online.
- Transport: any pickups or field trips.
- Revenue and payroll: annual figures and current policies.
Tutoring insurance, answered
Does general liability cover abuse claims?
Often not. Many policies exclude abuse and molestation. I add it by endorsement or a separate policy, subject to its terms.
I tutor online only. Do I need insurance?
Professional liability still matters for claims about your instruction. Cyber can help if student data is exposed.
Do contract tutors need their own coverage?
It's safer if they do, and you should ask for their certificate. Your policy may not cover independent contractors.
Does an after-school program need a license?
Some programs that provide care need a child care license from the state, while pure tutoring often doesn't. Check with the Department of Social Services if you supervise kids for longer periods.
Do you offer tutoring insurance outside California?
Yes. Clients across the country send the same quote form. Sam Alishahi is licensed in 48 states and Washington, DC and places policies there directly. In Florida and Washington, where Sam's licenses are still being issued, a partner agency in your state helps in the meantime. The shopping across carriers works the same way.
