Deadlines, filings and served papers
Clients blame document preparers for missed deadlines, wrong forms and typing errors. Process servers face claims over defective service and confrontations at the door, and mediators can be sued by a party unhappy with a settlement.
California legal document assistants must file a bond when they register with the county clerk, and process servers who serve regularly must register there too. I place E&O for the work itself, the bond, and general liability for the office.

- Registration bondRequired for legal document assistants.
- General liabilityOffice injuries and incidents during service.

Legal document assistant insurance, answered
Do paralegals need their own E&O?
California paralegals work under an attorney's supervision, and the firm's policy usually covers that work. Preparers who serve the public directly register as LDAs and need their own.
Is the bond the same as insurance?
No. The bond protects consumers, and the surety can seek repayment from you. E&O protects you.
Does E&O cover a missed filing deadline?
Claims from a mistake in your services often fall under E&O, subject to the policy terms.
Are process servers covered for assault claims?
Some policies exclude assault and battery. I look for forms that cover incidents during service.
Do you offer legal document assistant insurance outside California?
Yes. Clients across the country send the same quote form. Sam Alishahi is licensed in 48 states and Washington, DC and places policies there directly. In Florida and Washington, where Sam's licenses are still being issued, a partner agency in your state helps in the meantime. The shopping across carriers works the same way. Rules, minimums and markets differ by state — see insurance requirements by state.
