Students in the shop, graduates in the market
Schools that teach a trade put students next to the hazards of that trade: welding booths, shop tools, chemicals at a cosmetology station. Students aren't employees, so workers' comp doesn't cover them, and their injuries become liability claims or student accident claims.
The other risk is what you promised. A graduate who can't pass a licensing exam or find the job your brochure described may sue the school. I place general liability, educators' E&O, student accident, abuse coverage when minors attend, property for equipment, and workers' comp for instructors and staff.
- General liabilityStudent and visitor injuries on campus.
- Educators' E&OClaims over instruction, placement or promises.
- Student accidentMedical bills for injured students.
- Abuse coverageOften needed when minors attend.
What underwriters will ask
Having these ready means I can go to market on the first call. The quote form asks for the same things, and anything you don’t know yet can wait.
- School: programs, campuses and approvals.
- Students: enrollment and any minors.
- Hands-on work: shop, clinic or field training.
- Equipment: tools, machines and their values.
- Revenue and payroll: annual figures.
- History: current policies and claims.
Vocational school insurance, answered
Does workers' comp cover injured students?
Generally no, because students aren't employees. Student accident coverage pays medical bills, and general liability responds if the school is blamed, subject to the policy.
Can a former student sue over job placement claims?
Yes, and it happens. Educators' errors and omissions can cover defense and covered claims over instruction and representations. Keep marketing claims accurate.
Our beauty students serve the public. Is that covered?
Services on clinic customers need professional liability, not just general liability. Beauty and barber schools are approved by the state Board of Barbering and Cosmetology, and I place the clinic exposure to match.
Do we need abuse coverage?
If minors attend or you run youth programs, it's usually worth adding. Abuse and molestation coverage is often excluded from general liability unless added.
Do you offer vocational school insurance outside California?
Yes. Clients across the country send the same quote form. Sam Alishahi is licensed in 48 states and Washington, DC and places policies there directly. In Florida and Washington, where Sam's licenses are still being issued, a partner agency in your state helps in the meantime. The shopping across carriers works the same way.
