How it works

Boundary lines, field crews and costly gear

A surveying error can put a fence, foundation or whole building on the wrong side of a property line, and the claim may come years after the job. Surveyors are licensed by California's Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors, and Geologists, and owners and lenders lean on that stamp.

Field work brings its own risks: crews walking private land and road shoulders, cutting brush to clear sight lines, setting monuments, and carrying total stations, GPS units, scanners and drones. I place professional liability first, then fit general liability, equipment, auto and workers' comp around the crew.

  • Professional liabilityClaims from boundary, staking or mapping errors.
  • General liabilityProperty damage and injuries during field work.
  • EquipmentTotal stations, GPS, scanners and drones, on site or in the truck.
  • Workers' compField crews working roadside and on rough ground.

Questions

Land surveyor insurance, answered

Does general liability cover a survey mistake?

No. General liability is for bodily injury and property damage. A wrong boundary or staking error is a professional liability claim.

What if a claim comes years after the survey?

Professional liability is usually claims-made, so the policy in force when the claim is made responds. Keeping coverage continuous and setting a retroactive date protects older work.

Are drones covered?

Not on most standard policies. Drones used for mapping usually need their own aviation or drone coverage.

Do contracts require specific limits?

Public agencies and developers often set professional and general liability limits and additional insured wording. Send me the contract and I'll match it.

Do you offer land surveyor insurance outside California?

Yes. Clients across the country send the same quote form. Sam Alishahi is licensed in 48 states and Washington, DC and places policies there directly. In Florida and Washington, where Sam's licenses are still being issued, a partner agency in your state helps in the meantime. The shopping across carriers works the same way. Rules, minimums and markets differ by state — see insurance requirements by state.
