Helping clients find their words.

Professional liability, license defense, general liability and cyber for speech-language pathologists in private practice, schools, home visits and telepractice.

How it works

Your license is the business

Speech-language pathologists in California are licensed by the Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology and Hearing Aid Dispensers Board. Claims are less often about a physical injury than about a child's slow progress, a missed sign of a swallowing problem, a parent's complaint to the board or a billing dispute.

Professional liability covers claims about your evaluations and therapy, and license defense pays for a lawyer when the board opens a complaint. Practices with an office add general liability and property, and anyone keeping client records should look at cyber.

  • Professional liabilityClaims about your evaluations and therapy.
  • License defenseA lawyer for board complaints.
  • General liabilityFalls in your office or clinic.
  • Cyber liabilityClient records and telepractice.

Questions

Speech therapist insurance, answered

Does my employer's policy cover me?

It may cover you while you work for them, but often not for private clients or contract work on the side. Many SLPs carry their own policy.

Does professional liability pay for a board complaint?

Not always on its own. License defense coverage is often added to pay legal costs when the board opens a complaint, subject to its limit.

Are home visits covered?

Professional liability generally follows your services wherever you deliver them. Driving to visits is a separate auto question.

Do school districts require insurance?

Districts and agencies that contract SLPs often require professional and general liability and may ask to be named as additional insured.

Do you offer speech therapist insurance outside California?

Yes. Clients across the country send the same quote form. Sam Alishahi is licensed in 48 states and Washington, DC and places policies there directly. In Florida and Washington, where Sam's licenses are still being issued, a partner agency in your state helps in the meantime. The shopping across carriers works the same way. Rules, minimums and markets differ by state — see insurance requirements by state.
