How it works

Treatment risks

Most acupuncture claims come from a handful of problems: a burn from moxa or a heat lamp, a cupping bruise or blister, a fainting patient who falls, a broken needle, or in rare cases a punctured lung. Herbal formulas add a product side if a patient reacts.

I place malpractice that names the treatments you actually use, then add general liability for slips in the clinic and property for your tables and equipment. Clinics with several practitioners need each one listed.

  • Professional liabilityClaims from treatment.
  • General liabilityFalls in the clinic.
  • Product liabilityHerbs you dispense.
  • PropertyTables, lamps and supplies.

Questions

Acupuncturist insurance, answered

Does malpractice cover cupping and moxibustion?

Many policies do when they're within your scope of practice and listed. Tell me every treatment you use.

Are the herbs I dispense covered?

Some acupuncture policies include herbs; others need product liability added. I check the wording.

Who licenses acupuncturists in California?

The California Acupuncture Board, part of the Department of Consumer Affairs.

Do I need my own policy if I rent a room in a clinic?

Yes. The clinic's policy is built for the clinic, not for your own treatment.

Do you offer acupuncturist insurance outside California?

Yes. Clients across the country send the same quote form. Sam Alishahi is licensed in 48 states and Washington, DC and places policies there directly. In Florida and Washington, where Sam's licenses are still being issued, a partner agency in your state helps in the meantime. The shopping across carriers works the same way. Rules, minimums and markets differ by state — see insurance requirements by state.
