What is said in the room stays covered outside it.

Professional and general liability, abuse and molestation, cyber and workers' comp for counseling centers, outpatient mental health and substance use programs, and early intervention services.

How it works

Clinicians, clients and their records

An outpatient program's risk is professional: a client who harms themselves or someone else after a session, a boundary violation by a clinician, a records breach. General liability covers the waiting room; professional liability covers the judgment calls; cyber covers the client files that make a counseling center a target.

The nonprofit and human services programs I use write outpatient therapy, substance use treatment, transitional living and early intervention, with abuse coverage for clients who are minors or vulnerable adults. Residential and juvenile justice programs are rated separately.

  • Professional liabilityClinical decisions by licensed and associate staff.
  • General liabilityClients and visitors on the premises.
  • Abuse and molestationMinors and vulnerable adults in treatment.
  • CyberClient records and telehealth sessions.

Having these ready means I can go to market on the first call. The quote form asks for the same things, and anything you don’t know yet can wait.

  • Services: therapy, substance use, early intervention or mixed, and ages served.
  • Clinicians: licensed, associate and intern staff, and who supervises whom.
  • Clients: annual count, minors and court-referred clients.
  • Setting: outpatient only, or any residential or overnight care.
  • Entity: nonprofit or for-profit, which decides the market.
  • History: current policies and 4 years of loss runs.
Questions

Counseling center insurance, answered

Are associate clinicians covered under the center's policy?

Yes, when the policy names employees and supervisees as insureds. I confirm the wording, since some forms cover only the licensed clinician.

Do we need abuse coverage for an adult outpatient program?

If any clients are minors or vulnerable adults, yes. Funders and licensing expect it and standard liability forms exclude it.

Is telehealth covered?

Usually, within the states where your clinicians are licensed. Cyber coverage handles the platform and records side.

We are a for-profit practice. Does that change anything?

It changes the market. The nonprofit programs will not write a for-profit, so the practice goes to a carrier that writes behavioral health practices.

Do you offer counseling and outpatient program insurance outside California?

Yes. Clients across the country send the same quote form. Sam Alishahi is licensed in 49 states and Washington, DC and places policies there directly. In Florida, where Sam's licenses are still being issued, a partner agency in your state helps in the meantime. The shopping across carriers works the same way.
