Maintenance and construction are rated differently
Carriers treat a mow-and-blow maintenance route very differently from a C-27 landscape contractor installing hardscape, irrigation and retaining walls. Tree work above a certain height is another class again, and many policies exclude it.
I set up liability and workers' comp for the work your crews actually do, cover the mowers and trailers that are easy to steal, and provide the certificates HOAs and commercial property managers require.
- General liabilityDamage to clients' property, like a rock through a window, and injuries to others.
- Workers' compRequired in California for employees, including seasonal crews.
- EquipmentMowers, blowers, trimmers and trailers, on the job or in transit.
- Commercial autoTrucks that tow trailers and carry crews.
What underwriters will ask
Having these ready means I can go to market on the first call. The quote form asks for the same things, and anything you don’t know yet can wait.
- Work: maintenance, installation, hardscape, irrigation or tree work.
- License: CSLB number, if you have one.
- Payroll: employees, seasonal crews and payroll.
- Revenue: annual gross receipts.
- Equipment and vehicles: trucks, trailers and equipment value.
- History: current policies and loss runs.
Landscaping insurance, answered
Do gardeners need a contractor license in California?
Routine maintenance generally doesn't require one, but landscape construction, such as irrigation or hardscape, above the minor work limit requires a CSLB C-27 license. Check CSLB's current rules for your work.
Does general liability cover tree trimming?
Not always. Many landscaping policies exclude or limit tree work above a certain height, so it needs to be disclosed.
Are my mowers covered if they're stolen from the trailer?
Only with equipment coverage. General liability and commercial auto don't cover your equipment.
Do I need workers' comp for part-time or seasonal workers?
Yes. California requires workers' compensation for employees, including part-time and seasonal workers.
Do you offer landscaping insurance outside California?
Yes. Clients across the country send the same quote form. California policies are placed directly; outside California the request is handled together with a partner agency in your state, and the shopping across carriers works the same way. Rules, minimums and markets differ by state — see insurance requirements by state.
Tell me about your crews. I'll shop it.
The work you do, payroll and revenue are enough to start.
