Sawdust is fuel
Fine wood dust burns fast, and finishing rooms add solvents and stains. Underwriters ask about dust collection, spray booths and housekeeping before anything else, because a shop fire takes the machines, the lumber and the orders in progress.
Once a cabinet or chair leaves your shop, product liability follows it. If you also install, you need the same completed work protection a contractor carries.

What underwriters will ask
Having these ready means I can go to market on the first call. The quote form asks for the same things, and anything you don’t know yet can wait.
- Shop: address, construction and sprinklers.
- Dust and finishing: collection system and spray booth.
- Products: what you build and who buys it.
- Installation: whether your crew installs on site.
- Revenue and payroll: annual figures.
- History: current policies and claims.
Woodworking shop insurance, answered
Why do insurers ask about my dust collector?
Wood dust is a fire and explosion hazard and a breathing hazard for workers. A good system and a clean shop help you get quoted.
Is a customer's cabinet in my shop covered?
Property you're working on for others usually needs its own coverage line. I add it when you hold customer pieces.
Do I need a contractor's license to install cabinets?
In California, installation work on a job generally needs a CSLB license once it passes the minor work limit. Building in your shop alone doesn't.
What if someone is hurt by a chair I built?
Product liability often responds to injury claims from products you sell, subject to the policy terms.
Do you offer woodworking shop insurance outside California?
Yes. Clients across the country send the same quote form. Sam Alishahi is licensed in 48 states and Washington, DC and places policies there directly. In Florida and Washington, where Sam's licenses are still being issued, a partner agency in your state helps in the meantime. The shopping across carriers works the same way. Rules, minimums and markets differ by state — see insurance requirements by state.
