A golf course is five businesses on one property
A course is a landscaping crew, a restaurant and bar, a retail shop, an event venue and a cart fleet, all on the same land. Each one brings its own claims. Errant balls hit homes and cars. Carts tip on slopes. Guests drink at weddings. Grounds crews work around mowers, chemicals and fuel.
I put the pieces together on one account: workers' comp for every crew, liability for the course and the carts, liquor liability for the bar, property for the clubhouse and maintenance barn, and equipment coverage for the mowers. Then I look at what is often missed, like pollution from fuel and fertilizer storage, D&O for a member-owned club's board, employment practices and an umbrella over all of it.

- General liabilityErrant balls, cart accidents and guest injuries.

- Activity: rounds per year, tournaments, and weddings or private events.
- Carts and equipment: number of carts, mower and equipment values, fuel and chemical storage.
- Food and drink: restaurant, bar and beverage cart sales, and your liquor license type.
- Staff: employees and payroll for grounds, food and beverage, pro shop and office.
- Current policies: declarations pages and five years of loss runs.
Golf course insurance, answered
What does golf course insurance cover?
It's usually several policies on one account: workers' comp, general liability, liquor liability, property for the clubhouse and other buildings, equipment coverage for mowers and carts, and an umbrella. Many clubs add pollution, D&O and employment practices coverage.
Who is liable for errant golf balls?
It depends on who was hit. In Shin v. Ahn (2007), the California Supreme Court held that being hit by a ball is an inherent risk of golf, so golfers owe other players only a limited duty. Neighbors, drivers on nearby roads and passersby didn't choose to play, and their claims can name the golfer, the course or both. I make sure the course's liability policy is set up for those claims.
Do golf carts need separate insurance at a course?
Carts raise two questions: who pays when a cart injures someone, and who pays to repair or replace the carts. I check that your liability policy responds to cart accidents, add physical damage coverage for the fleet, and look at whether any carts cross or use public roads, since that can change which policy applies.
What workers' comp class code applies to a golf course in California?
Most golf courses and country clubs use WCIRB classification 9060. It includes course maintenance, cart maintenance, golf instruction, pro shops, driving ranges, tournaments, the front desk, and restaurant and bar staff at the club. Hotel operations are classified separately, and California requires workers' comp even with one employee.
Does a country club need liquor liability insurance?
If the club sells or serves alcohol, yes, it should be quoted. That includes the bar, the beverage cart and events. California ABC issues club licenses, such as Type 50, that allow sales only to members and their guests. Send me your license type and I'll match the coverage to how you actually serve.
Does a member-owned country club need D&O insurance?
A member-owned club is run by a board, and members can sue the board over dues, assessments, membership decisions and how money is spent. General liability doesn't cover those claims. D&O insurance is written for them.
Are weddings and tournaments covered?
They can be, but events add outside guests, vendors and alcohol. I tell the carriers about your events up front and review the contracts you sign with couples, caterers and tournament organizers.
Do you offer golf course and country club insurance outside California?
Yes. Clients across the country send the same quote form. California policies are placed directly; outside California the request is handled together with a partner agency in your state, and the shopping across carriers works the same way. Rules, minimums and markets differ by state — see insurance requirements by state.
