A work van is a commercial risk
Once a van carries your tools, inventory or customers' goods, a personal auto policy can deny the claim. Carriers rate a cargo van by how it's used (service calls, your own deliveries, or hauling for others), how far it goes and who drives it.
I quote vans used for your own business separately from vans hauling other people's freight, because they're different classes with different markets. Shelving, ladder racks and refrigeration count too, so I list the upfit value on the schedule.
- Auto liabilityInjuries and damage you cause on the road.
- Physical damageThe van and its upfit, at its stated value.
- Tools and equipmentTools in the van, on an inland marine form.
- CargoGoods you carry for customers.
What underwriters will ask
Having these ready means I can go to market on the first call. The quote form asks for the same things, and anything you don’t know yet can wait.
- Vans: year, make, model, VIN and gross vehicle weight.
- Upfit: shelving, racks or refrigeration and what they cost.
- Use: service calls, your own goods, or hauling for others.
- Radius: how far from where the van is parked.
- Drivers: names, dates of birth, license numbers and years licensed.
- History: your current policy and any claims.
Cargo van insurance, answered
Does my personal auto policy cover a work van?
Usually not once the van is used mainly for business. Tell me how you use it and I'll show you where the line falls.
Are the shelves and racks covered?
They can be, if the van is insured at a stated value that includes the upfit. Otherwise a total loss may only pay for a plain van.
Do I need a USDOT number for a Sprinter?
Some heavier Sprinter and Transit models are rated over 10,000 pounds. Above that weight, interstate business use needs a USDOT number, and California has its own carrier rules.
Are my tools covered if the van is broken into?
Not under auto physical damage. Tools need their own inland marine coverage.
Do you offer cargo van insurance outside California?
Yes. Clients across the country send the same quote form. Sam Alishahi is licensed in all 50 states and Washington, DC and places policies there directly. The shopping across carriers works the same way. Rules, minimums and markets differ by state — see truck insurance by state or insurance requirements by state.
Send your vans and drivers. I'll shop it.
A van list with upfit values, a driver list and your current declarations page are enough to start.
