Why it matters

Homeowners policies cap jewelry theft

Most homeowners and renters policies set a special limit for jewelry theft, often a few thousand dollars in total, and usually don't cover a ring that's simply lost or a stone that falls out.

An engagement ring policy covers the ring itself for its appraised value. You can insure it the day you buy it, before you propose, and add wedding bands later.

  • Loss and theftAt home, in the car or while traveling.
  • Accidental damageA chipped stone or a bent prong.
  • Mysterious disappearanceYou took it off to wash your hands and it's gone.
  • Repair or replacementPaid at the insured value, subject to policy terms.

Before you call

What underwriters will ask

Having these ready means I can go to market on the first call. The quote form asks for the same things, and anything you don’t know yet can wait.

Start the Quote Form

  • Appraisal or receipt: the jeweler's appraisal or your purchase receipt.
  • Value: the appraised or purchase price.
  • Stone details: carat, cut and any grading report.
  • Photo: a clear picture of the ring.
  • Where you live: your home address.
  • Current policy: whether the ring is already on your homeowners or renters policy.
Questions

Engagement ring insurance, answered

Doesn't my homeowners or renters policy cover my ring?

Only up to a low special limit for jewelry theft, and usually not for simple loss or damage. A separate ring policy or a scheduled item covers it at its appraised value.

When should I insure the ring?

The day you buy it. Rings are lost and damaged before proposals too.

Do I need an appraisal?

Usually. A jeweler's appraisal or a detailed receipt is enough for most carriers.

Is a lost center stone covered?

Often yes, when the policy includes mysterious disappearance. I'll confirm how each policy handles it.

Do you offer engagement ring insurance outside California?

Yes. Clients across the country send the same quote form. California policies are placed directly; outside California the request is handled together with a partner agency in your state, and the shopping across carriers works the same way. Rules, minimums and markets differ by state — see insurance requirements by state or high-value home insurance by state.

Send the appraisal. I'll shop it.

The ring's value and a photo of the appraisal are enough to start.
