Gear, sessions and content
A studio's value sits in its gear, its room and its files. A water leak, a power surge or a break-in can wipe out consoles, monitors and vintage mics in one night, and the studio can't book sessions until it's rebuilt. Clients also leave instruments, hard drives and unreleased masters with you.
Podcast and production studios add media risk, like a guest's defamation claim or a music clearance dispute. I cover the gear on and off site, client property, lost income while you rebuild, and media liability for what you produce or publish.

What underwriters will ask
Having these ready means I can go to market on the first call. The quote form asks for the same things, and anything you don’t know yet can wait.
- Studio: address, rooms and soundproofing.
- Gear: list with values, including vintage items.
- Clients: bands, podcasters or labels.
- Content: whether you produce or publish shows.
- Revenue and payroll: annual figures and staff engineers.
- History: current policies and claims.
Recording studio insurance, answered
Is gear I take to a gig or remote session covered?
Only if the policy covers equipment away from your premises. Inland marine or equipment floater coverage can follow the gear.
What about a client's guitar damaged in my studio?
General liability usually excludes property in your care. Coverage for client property can be added, subject to the policy terms.
Does it cover data loss from a crashed drive?
Property policies often limit lost data. Cyber or valuable papers coverage can help with the cost of recovery, subject to the terms.
We produce a podcast. Do we need media liability?
If you publish content, defamation and copyright claims are possible. Media liability is written for those.
Do you offer recording studio insurance outside California?
Yes. Clients across the country send the same quote form. Sam Alishahi is licensed in 48 states and Washington, DC and places policies there directly. In Florida and Washington, where Sam's licenses are still being issued, a partner agency in your state helps in the meantime. The shopping across carriers works the same way. Rules, minimums and markets differ by state — see insurance requirements by state.
