Donations, consignments and rare pieces
Resale stores carry stock that's hard to value: donated goods with no purchase price, consignors' items you don't own, and antiques or collectibles worth far more than they look. Donation drop-offs bring lifting injuries, and aisles of used furniture bring trips and tip-overs.
I set property values that match how you get your stock, cover consigned goods in your care, and schedule high-value pieces when they need their own limit. Nonprofit thrift stores can also add directors and officers coverage for the board.
- PropertyStock valued at your cost or selling price.
- Consigned goodsItems others own, on your floor.
- General liabilityFalls, furniture tip-overs and product claims.
- Workers' compStaff lifting donations and furniture.
What underwriters will ask
Having these ready means I can go to market on the first call. The quote form asks for the same things, and anything you don’t know yet can wait.
- Store: address and square footage.
- Stock: donated, bought or consigned.
- Valuables: highest-value items and how they're kept.
- Donations: drop-off area and truck pickups.
- Staff: employees and volunteers.
- History: current policies and claims.
Thrift store insurance, answered
How is donated stock valued?
Policies value stock at cost or at selling price. Donated goods have no cost, so the valuation clause matters, and I set it on purpose.
Are consignors' items covered?
Only if the policy covers property of others in your care. Your consignment agreement should say who insures what.
Do volunteers count for workers' comp?
Volunteers at a nonprofit are treated differently from employees, and some policies can add volunteer accident coverage. I check how yours are set up.
Can I insure a rare piece separately?
Yes. Scheduling an item with an appraisal gives it its own limit.
Do you offer thrift and antique store insurance outside California?
Yes. Clients across the country send the same quote form. Sam Alishahi is licensed in 48 states and Washington, DC and places policies there directly. In Florida and Washington, where Sam's licenses are still being issued, a partner agency in your state helps in the meantime. The shopping across carriers works the same way.
