Plants, yards and chemicals
A garden center sells living stock that sits outdoors, where frost, heat waves and broken irrigation can kill it, and many standard property forms limit coverage for plants in the open. Customers walk wet, uneven yards, load heavy bags of soil and feed, and share space with forklifts and delivery trucks.
California's Department of Food and Agriculture licenses nurseries that sell nursery stock, and fertilizer, pesticide and feed storage brings its own questions. I build a policy that names your outdoor stock, your chemicals and your trucks, so the gaps show up before a loss does.

What underwriters will ask
Having these ready means I can go to market on the first call. The quote form asks for the same things, and anything you don’t know yet can wait.
- Location: address, buildings, greenhouses and yard size.
- Stock: plant values outdoors and indoors by season.
- Chemicals: fertilizer, pesticide and fuel storage.
- Equipment and vehicles: forklifts and delivery trucks.
- Revenue and payroll: annual figures.
- History: current policies and claims.
Garden center insurance, answered
Are plants outside covered if they die in a freeze?
Standard property forms often limit or exclude plants in the open and weather damage to them. Some markets offer nursery stock coverage that names those causes; I check what each one offers.
Do I need a license to sell plants?
California's Department of Food and Agriculture licenses nurseries that sell nursery stock. I'll ask for your license details when quoting.
Is a fertilizer or pesticide spill covered?
Most general liability policies exclude pollution. A pollution endorsement or separate policy can fill that gap.
We sell hay and feed. Does that change things?
Hay storage is a fire risk, and feed sold for animals can bring product claims. I rate feed stores for both.
Do you offer garden center insurance outside California?
Yes. Clients across the country send the same quote form. Sam Alishahi is licensed in 48 states and Washington, DC and places policies there directly. In Florida and Washington, where Sam's licenses are still being issued, a partner agency in your state helps in the meantime. The shopping across carriers works the same way. Rules, minimums and markets differ by state — see insurance requirements by state.
