When a batch fails, your result gets questioned.
Coverage for licensed cannabis testing laboratories: errors and omissions for the results you certify, liability, instruments and premises, the vehicles your samplers drive, and your analysts.

A lab sells an opinion on every batch
Before cannabis goods reach a retailer, a Type 8 licensed laboratory tests them. The lab must hold ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation, or an interim license while it works toward it. Its own samplers collect samples from distributors under written procedures and chain of custody, then drive them back to the lab.
The main exposure is the result. A distributor whose batch fails, or a brand whose potency claim is challenged, may blame the lab, and a pass that later proves wrong can draw product claims. I place professional liability for testing errors alongside general liability, property for instruments, auto for the sample vehicles and workers' comp.
- Errors and omissionsClaims that a test result or certificate of analysis was wrong.
- General liabilityVisitors, samplers on clients' premises and property damage.
- Lab equipmentChromatographs, mass spectrometers and other instruments.
- Auto and workers' compSample-transport vehicles and lab staff.
What underwriters will ask
Having these ready means I can go to market on the first call. The quote form asks for the same things, and anything you don’t know yet can wait.
- License: DCC testing laboratory license and accreditation status.
- Testing: methods offered, annual samples and main clients.
- Controls: sampling procedures, chain of custody and quality control.
- Equipment: instrument list and replacement values.
- Vehicles and staff: sample vehicles, analysts and payroll.
- History: current policies and any disputes or claims.
Testing lab insurance, answered
Does general liability cover a wrong test result?
Usually not. A result that causes financial loss is a professional services exposure, which is what errors and omissions coverage is for.
Do I need commercial auto for sampling trips?
Lab samplers drive to distributors and back, and DCC can ask for proof of insurance on each vehicle that transports samples, so the vehicles should be on a commercial policy.
Does accreditation matter to underwriters?
It's the regulatory baseline. ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation, written sampling procedures and quality-control records show how results are produced and defended.
Can a lab also hold other cannabis licenses?
Labs are separately licensed and reviewed on their testing work. Tell me about any related businesses and I'll take them to the market with the full picture.
Do you offer cannabis testing lab insurance outside California?
Yes. Clients across the country send the same quote form. Sam Alishahi is licensed in all 50 states and Washington, DC and places policies there directly. The shopping across carriers works the same way. Rules, minimums and markets differ by state — see insurance requirements by state.
Send your accreditation and methods. I'll shop it.
Your license, accreditation status, instruments and sample volume are enough to start.
