Batteries, boards and supply chains
Electronics makers carry product risk that outlasts the sale: a battery that overheats, a power supply that shocks, a component that fails inside a customer's product. Many companies design in California and assemble overseas, and in a lawsuit the company whose name is on the box is often treated as the manufacturer.
I place product liability with an eye on where parts come from, recall coverage as its own line, property and equipment breakdown for SMT lines and reflow ovens, income coverage when a key supplier goes down, and tech E&O when your product's failure costs a customer money rather than causing injury.
- Product liabilityInjury and property damage from your products.
- Product recallCosts to pull and replace defective products.
- Equipment breakdownProduction lines, ovens and test gear.
- Tech E&OFinancial loss when your product fails to perform.
What underwriters will ask
Having these ready means I can go to market on the first call. The quote form asks for the same things, and anything you don’t know yet can wait.
- Products: what you make and where it's sold.
- Sourcing: domestic and overseas suppliers.
- Batteries: lithium cells in your products.
- Certifications: safety listings your products carry.
- Sales and payroll: annual figures.
- History: recalls, claims and current policies.
Electronics manufacturer insurance, answered
Does product liability pay for a recall?
Generally no. Product liability responds to injury and property damage claims. The cost of notifying buyers, pulling stock and replacing units is a separate recall policy.
We design here and build overseas. Who's the manufacturer?
In a U.S. lawsuit, the brand selling the product is often treated as the manufacturer. I look at your supplier contracts and their insurance, and place your product liability on that basis.
What if our part fails inside a customer's product?
If no one is hurt and nothing else is damaged, the claim is usually a financial loss, which tech E&O handles, subject to the policy. General liability often won't.
Do Proposition 65 warnings affect my insurance?
Prop 65 notices and enforcement claims are often excluded or limited. Proper warnings on products sold in California are the main protection.
Do you offer electronics manufacturer insurance outside California?
Yes. Clients across the country send the same quote form. Sam Alishahi is licensed in 48 states and Washington, DC and places policies there directly. In Florida and Washington, where Sam's licenses are still being issued, a partner agency in your state helps in the meantime. The shopping across carriers works the same way. Rules, minimums and markets differ by state — see insurance requirements by state.
