Your work sits full of water
A sprinkler system holds water under pressure for years. If a fitting fails or a head is knocked off, it can flood several floors before anyone shuts the valve. That's why carriers look closely at fire protection contractors, and why the claims that follow often land years after the job is done.
I look at the work you actually do, whether new installs, tenant improvements, or inspection, testing and maintenance contracts. Then I shop it with carriers that write fire protection contractors and set up the certificates general contractors and property managers ask for.
- General liabilityInjury and property damage claims tied to your work, including water damage after a job is finished.
- Workers' compRequired in California if you have employees.
- Professional liabilityClaims that a layout, calculation or inspection report was wrong.
- Tools and trucksInland marine for tools and threading machines, and commercial auto for service trucks.
What underwriters will ask
Having these ready means I can go to market on the first call. The quote form asks for the same things, and anything you don’t know yet can wait.
- License: CSLB number, classifications and any State Fire Marshal license.
- Work mix: new installs versus inspection, testing and service.
- Buildings: homes, apartments, commercial or high-rise.
- Payroll: fitters, apprentices, office staff and subcontractor costs.
- Vehicles and tools: service trucks and equipment value.
- History: current policies and five years of loss runs.
Fire sprinkler contractor insurance, answered
What insurance does a fire sprinkler contractor need?
Most carry general liability, workers' comp if they have employees, commercial auto for their trucks, inland marine for tools and the $25,000 contractor license bond CSLB requires. Many add professional liability for design and inspection work, and an umbrella when contracts call for higher limits.
What is a C-16 license?
C-16 is the CSLB Fire Protection Contractor classification. It covers laying out, fabricating and installing all types of fire protection systems and their equipment, but not electrical alarm systems.
What are the insurance requirements for a C-16 license?
CSLB requires a $25,000 contractor license bond for an active license, and proof of workers' comp if you have employees. The exemption for licensed contractors with no employees is set to end on January 1, 2028. General liability isn't a CSLB condition for most licensees, but almost every general contractor and property manager will ask for it.
What insurance does a fire sprinkler inspection company need?
Under Title 19, servicing automatic fire extinguishing systems takes either a State Fire Marshal "A" license or a CSLB C-16 license. A company applying for the State Fire Marshal license must keep liability insurance of at least $1,000,000 per occurrence on file. Because inspection reports can be blamed for a later failure, I also look at professional liability.
Does general liability cover water damage from a sprinkler discharge?
It can cover damage caused by your work, but some contractor policies limit or exclude certain water damage. The policy wording matters, so I check it before you sign a big contract, not after a claim.
Do my fitters need a state certification?
CSLB says C-16 qualifiers and journey-level workers who install or repair water-based systems in commercial or multifamily buildings need a Fire Sprinkler Fitter Certification, and apprentices need a registration. It does not apply to work on one and two-family homes.
Can I get coverage if I only do residential fire sprinklers?
Yes. Residential-only work is a different risk from high-rise or commercial work, and I tell carriers exactly what share of your work is homes so it's rated that way.
Do you offer fire sprinkler contractor insurance outside California?
Yes. Clients across the country send the same quote form. California policies are placed directly; outside California the request is handled together with a partner agency in your state, and the shopping across carriers works the same way. Rules, minimums and markets differ by state — see insurance requirements by state.
