Food Banks · Pantries · Meal Delivery

Every box that leaves the warehouse carries your name.

How it works

Food handling, volunteers and a cold warehouse

A food bank runs a warehouse, a fleet and a volunteer workforce, and hands out food it did not make. Product liability answers for a recalled or spoiled item; volunteer accident coverage answers when a retiree is hurt sorting cans; a refrigeration breakdown can wipe out a cooler full of donated protein in an afternoon.

The nonprofit programs I use write food banks, pantries and meal sites as a class of their own, and extend to the delivery vans and the senior meal routes. They want the organization's nonprofit status, volunteer counts, vehicle list and loss runs.

Questions

Food bank insurance, answered

Are we liable for donated food?

Federal and California donor protection laws shield good-faith donors and the charities that distribute food, but the shield has limits and defense still costs money. Product liability covers the gap.

Are volunteers covered under workers' comp?

Usually not. Volunteer accident coverage pays medical bills for volunteers hurt while helping, and the liability policy can name them as insureds.

What if our cooler fails?

Equipment breakdown and spoilage coverage pay for the lost food and the repair. It has to be added to the property policy.

Do volunteers' own cars need to be on our policy?

Hired and non-owned auto coverage protects the organization when a volunteer drives their own car on a route.

Do you offer food bank and meal program insurance outside California?

Yes. Clients across the country send the same quote form. Sam Alishahi is licensed in 49 states and Washington, DC and places policies there directly. In Florida, where Sam's licenses are still being issued, a partner agency in your state helps in the meantime. The shopping across carriers works the same way.
