Contractors pollution liability, general liability, vacuum truck auto, equipment and workers' comp for septic pumpers, installers and sewer line contractors.

Waste, trenches and trucks
Septic and sewer work is pollution work. A spill from a hose, a backup into a home, or a leach field that fails can lead to cleanup costs and claims that a standard general liability policy usually excludes. Add deep trenches, confined spaces and loaded vacuum trucks, and the risks are well beyond a typical plumbing job.
In California, septic installation is licensed by the Contractors State License Board as C-42 Sanitation System work. I pair general liability with contractors pollution liability, then cover the trucks, excavators and crew. Many of these accounts are written in the surplus lines market, which I work with every day.

What underwriters will ask
Having these ready means I can go to market on the first call. The quote form asks for the same things, and anything you don’t know yet can wait.
- License: CSLB classifications held (such as C-42).
- Work: pumping, installation, repair and sewer by share.
- Disposal: where waste is taken.
- Vehicles: trucks, tank sizes and drivers.
- Revenue and payroll: annual figures and crew size.
- History: current policies and claims.
Septic contractor insurance, answered
Doesn't general liability cover a sewage spill?
Usually not. Most general liability policies exclude pollution, so a spill needs contractors pollution liability.
Do I need a license to install septic systems?
Installation is contractor work. CSLB's C-42 Sanitation System classification covers it, and your county may require its own permits.
Is a spill from my truck on the road covered?
Many auto policies limit pollution from what you haul. I look for auto pollution coverage so road spills aren't left out.
Why are these policies often surplus lines?
Pollution and confined-space work fall outside many standard markets. Surplus lines insurers write them, and I explain how those policies differ.
Do you offer septic contractor insurance outside California?
Yes. Clients across the country send the same quote form. Sam Alishahi is licensed in 48 states and Washington, DC and places policies there directly. In Florida and Washington, where Sam's licenses are still being issued, a partner agency in your state helps in the meantime. The shopping across carriers works the same way. Rules, minimums and markets differ by state — see insurance requirements by state.
