Wet saws, slabs and showers
Tile work fails slowly. A shower pan that wasn't sloped or sealed can leak behind the wall for months before anyone sees the mold, and the claim lands long after you were paid. That's why completed work coverage matters more for tile than for many trades.
Cutting stone and engineered quartz also throws silica dust, which Cal/OSHA regulates closely. I look at whether you install only or also fabricate in a shop, because underwriters price those very differently.
- General liabilityProperty damage and completed work.
- Workers' compLifting, knees, cuts and dust.
- Tools and equipmentWet saws, grinders and slab carts.
- License bondRequired for a CSLB license.
What underwriters will ask
Having these ready means I can go to market on the first call. The quote form asks for the same things, and anything you don’t know yet can wait.
- License: CSLB number and classification.
- Work: residential, commercial, new or remodel.
- Fabrication: install only, or a cutting shop.
- Subs: who you hire and their certificates.
- Revenue and payroll: annual figures.
- History: current policies and claims.
Tile contractor insurance, answered
Is a shower leak covered years after the job?
Completed work coverage often responds to damage your finished work causes, subject to the policy. The cost to redo your own tile is usually not covered.
Does cutting quartz change my insurance?
It can. Shops that cut engineered stone face silica rules and closer review for workers' comp.
Which license do tile contractors hold in California?
Tile work is the C-54 classification with the Contractors State License Board. A license bond is part of getting licensed.
Do general contractors ask for additional insured status?
Most do, often with primary and noncontributory wording and a waiver of subrogation. I set those up on the policy.
Do you offer tile contractor insurance outside California?
Yes. Clients across the country send the same quote form. Sam Alishahi is licensed in 48 states and Washington, DC and places policies there directly. In Florida and Washington, where Sam's licenses are still being issued, a partner agency in your state helps in the meantime. The shopping across carriers works the same way. Rules, minimums and markets differ by state — see insurance requirements by state.
